What has your career been like up until you joined us at Headway Luton?

Before coming to Headway Luton, I have worked in the NHS in community services, frailty, end‑of‑life care, cancer, primary care, and place‑based programmes. Before the NHS I worked in Parliament as a research assistant, developed buildings to support community sports activities in Worksop and worked for Healthwatch in Coventry, Leicestershire and Rutland. I took voluntary redundancy from my NHS job with the aim to spend more time with my family but also get back into community work.

What do you like about community work?

I have always liked the community side of the NHS as it is less clinical and you are not so far removed from the people who are impacted by government or NHS initiatives. The clients at Headway Luton are great, I love chatting to them and getting teased about my parking and dress sense. Hearing their stories has enabled me to keep grounded and connected to the issues that matter to them. I missed this in my previous roles.

What attracted you to Headway Luton

I have a deep commitment to improving the lives of people and families affected by health challenges, including acquired brain injury. I find it very satisfying working in an organization that helps people retain their independence. The part-time hours also suit me as I have a 3 year-old son. Headway Luton is small enough for me continue leading the organization in making positive change in people’s lives but also has great potential for growth and bigger impact which I am excited by.

What have you got planned for this chapter in Headway Luton’s story

I want to using my connections in the NHS and local community to raise awareness of ABI and of Headway Luton. It is one of those conditions and charities you probably do not hear about until you are impacted by a brain injury. This might include growing into other areas within and around Luton and south Central Bedfordshire.

I love developing staff, so am looking into the skills and experiences of our fantastic team to make sure everyone is reaching their full potential. The activities at our day centre in Luton and Houghton Regis are great and I am keep to see how we can bring in more varied activities to meet the changing goals of our diverse clients.

I am keen to get involved in fundraising and have signed up to take part in Team Headway at the Love Luton RunFest in October – do join us!

What do you do in your spare time?

I have a three-year-old, so he keeps me busy! I also like sewing and crafts and I hope to make bunting for the centre as we are celebrating 150 years of Luton as a Borough with a week of parties and fun activities.
