History of Headway Luton

In the 1990s, a group of local people came together to find support for their loved one or friend who had an acquired brain injury. There were no specific local services for people with an ABI back then. Over the decades Headway Luton has grown thanks to the founders, volunteers, trustees, fundraisers, funders and clients.

History of HWL

We aim to:

  • Enable clients to live as independently as possible.
  • Maximise clients’ full potential, increase their personal skills and opportunities for social interaction.
  • Provide a wide range of educational, cognitive and social activities to meet the needs of the client.
  • Support family members and carers by offering advocacy, advice, information and emotional support.
  • Advocate and lobby for the development of appropriate professional services by all statutory and voluntary organisations for our client group.
  • Create a wider understanding of brain injury within the community through training, presentations and promotions.
  • Recruit, train and manage a bank of skilled volunteers.
  • Secure sustainable funding and other resources to further our aims and objectives.

Client Stories

Read the stories and experiences of some of our clients. They all acquired their brain injury in different ways and at different points in their lives. The one thing they have in common is the assertion that there is life after brain injury.

Client Testimonials

One of the long term effects of my ABI is that I suffer from anxiety attacks. These are very severe at the time I experience them. Although I find it very hard to leave my house to go to Headway some days, I am always very happy that I tried to get there.

Headway encourages me to learn. Before my brain injury I did not know how to use computers. Now it is my favourite activity.

My goal is not to get to where I was before my brain injury. My goal is to be better than I was. Headway has put me on a ladder, and I am climbing upwards. Having a brain injury is not all doom and gloom.

I was frightened to come to Headway at first but coming here has given me confidence to enter new environments and situations.

I love learning the acoustic guitar. We almost have a band. There is an electric bass, drumkit, keyboard and some people sing. It’s great!

Coming to Headway enables me to be more independent from my parents and carers. I come along, choose what I want to do with my day and have made lots of new friends who understand me.
