What is the role of a trustee? 

The Board of Trustee’s main role is to ensure that Headway Luton meets its legal duties, remains solvent and is well run. We set the strategic direction of the organisation and support the management team with the implementation of agreed operational objectives. We also look at innovative ways to raise awareness of acquired brain injury and our services. The Charity Commission for England and Wales have produced a trustee welcome pack where you can find out more about the role.

What skills does a trustee need? 

We are looking for people who have: 

  • Good communication skills.
  • A creative mind and have good independent judgment.
  • The ability to work effectively within the team.
  • The ability to evaluate and interpret information and think creatively.
  • The necessary skills to understand and accept legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

We are particularly keen to hear from people who have expertise in HR, law or social care, but all knowledge and skills are welcomed and valued.

We want our trustees, staff and volunteers to represent the diversity of the people we support. We encourage disabled and non-disabled people from all ages, ethnicities, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds to consider taking on this leadership role. If you think you have something to offer, please do get in touch. Support and training will be provided for those with no prior trustee or committee experience. 

What level of commitment is required? 

Regular attendance at our Board of Trustees meetings, held at Headway Luton, Alma Street. These are once a month face-to-face or sometimes via video call. You will also need to attend our Annual General Meeting in November. You may also need to involved in one or more sub-groups as and when needed. 

Is it a paid position? 

No. Trustees offer their support voluntarily but can have agreed ‘out of pocket’ expenses reimbursed, including car mileage, to official meetings.
