My first volunteering role was at Headway’s Jubilee party. I took tea and coffee orders from clients and helped to serve the lunches. I assisted a staff member with filming the event, plus helped to clean up after. It was such a busy but fun day. I have also helped at the walk in the park, cheering on clients as they reached the one mile mark and helping the photographer. I now volunteer in the day centre. I have KBG Syndrome which can make some tasks more difficult but the staff and clients at Headway support me in my role.

My husband has been a client of Headway for many years. I am retired now, but used to work in Sexual Health services in Luton and still have many connections in the town. I like to promote Headway when I am out socially. I wear a Headway t-shirt, hand out leaflets and let people know how the service has benefited my husband. I like to keep up to date with the latest developments in the town regarding disability services and enjoy attending Headway’s AGM.

I am a retired web editor for the University of Bedfordshire. I have volunteered for Headway Luton by staffing a stall selling some of my allotment produce and greeting cards made by clients. I also assisted at the Walk a Mile fundraising event in Wardown Park. It is great fun to spread the word about the causes and consequences of brain injury and have fun with clients and staff at awareness raising events in the town.

I am a stay-at-home mum and wanted to get some work experience. I have really enjoyed supporting clients in their arts and crafts activities. I also helped create a display board where we wrote positive affirmations. I also like writing poetry and have had the opportunity to ready my poems to clients. Staff and clients have made me feel welcomed and valued. I volunteered for one year and would recommend Headway as a place for people to develop their skills and interests to support others.

I volunteered during the summer holidays as a Speech and Language support worker. I learnt to focus on personalisation of therapy through session/task modification, since various factors can impact on communication such as vision, hearing, physical ability and cognition. Aphasia and other SLCN can also present themselves in a variety of ways. I also learnt more theoretical skills such as using Total Communication to aid speech production. Connecting with my love for Modern Languages was a highlight, conducting interventions for clients with English as a second language (ESL) and 1:1 Spanish sessions for a client.

During my time at Headway, I have had the opportunity to engage in a variety of tasks that have significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. My responsibilities have included serving clients tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and lunch, which allowed me to build meaningful relationships with both clients and staff. I particularly enjoyed supporting clients in computing, helping them navigate technology and improve their digital skills. This experience has been instrumental in reinforcing my passion for computer science, a field I am excited to study in college.
