I worked in Luton as a grocer, a factory worker at Skefko, and Asda Dunstable until my stroke at aged 58.
As part of my recovery, I looked into services I could attend, but I found they were geared towards the elderly. Being quite young, I did not feel I belonged.
I found out about Headway Luton and I liked how there is a mixture of people of different ages. At first I kept to myself and did not want to join in, but over time I grew in confidence and participate in a lot of activities, especially yoga, mindfulness and group games. I have been coming to the day centre for around 15 years now and have seen a lot of changes and people coming and going. I really miss my friend Tommy who died during the peak of the pandemic. We played dominoes together and had a great laugh. The centre has changed and expanded over the years and I feel it has gotten better and better every year. Everyone gets on well and there is a wide range of activities to choose from.
I am now nearly 80 and love coming to Headway three times a week – two days Luton and Wednesdays in Houghton Regis. I look forward to coming and if it wasn’t for Headway Luton I would likely be stuck at home watching re-runs of Emmerdale!
