Stef and Daisy, from Manshead Sixth Form, joined us at our Luton day centre for work experience. They spent a week with us in July 2026 and on their last day reflected on what they have learned through their time with us and how it would impact their studies and careers.
How did you hear about Headway Luton?
Stef: My mother knew about Headway as she has worked with people who have an acquired brain injury in the Midlands. She spoke very highly of Headway as an organization, so I wanted to check out if there was one nearer to me. I searched online and found Headway Luton.
Daisy: I learned about Headway through Stef. We have known each other since Year 7 and have done a lot of volunteering together, so I was eager to join Stef at Headway Luton.
What have you learned since being here?
Stef: So much! I think on a personal development level I took the initiative to research Headway Luton, called them up, travelled all the way from Leighton Buzzard on the bus and just generally experienced being independent.
Daisy: Yes I agree, I have also developed confidence in talking to a range of different people. I have worked with children before, but it is very different, and very enjoyable, talking to adults of all ages.
Stef: I enjoyed listening to clients’ stories and the advice they have given us as young people. I was having some difficulties in my personal life and a client said to me “everything can be sorted out”, which I found comforting.
Daisy: A brain injury can happen so quickly and turn your life around overnight. We were both taken aback by the positivity many clients have, and how they are navigating their lives after brain injury. We also are more aware that we should not take our health for granted and to not judge a book by its cover.
What will you take with you from your experience here into your studies or future career?
Daisy: I am studying sociology, criminology and ethics and philosophy. I am interested in how religious faith is used, or rejected, in times of personal change. It was fascinating talking to clients about this and I could might use this as a topic for a future assignment.
Stef: I am studying psychology, sociology and economics. In terms of the sociological aspects, I think more needs to be done as a society to eradicate inequalities experienced by people with acquired brain injury as well as other disabilities.
What is next for you both?
Stef: When I finished college, I plan to take a gap year and travel. I am looking into studying educational psychology, working with children and young people.
Daisy: I am looking forward to going to university after college to study philosophy and religious studies. After that, I am not sure, but I have considered careers in the police force or as a diplomat.
